Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet developed by Microsoft featuring calculation, graphing tools, pivot tables, and a macro programming language. Entering data into Excel and creating calculations is an early form of reporting for many restaurants.

As restaurant companies grow they usually find the amount of time it takes to manually input data too time consuming and error ridden. Automating data entry and reporting from restaurant systems solves this problem but it doesn't usually account for all data.
